چکیده

Cerebral ischemic stroke is a major reason for death in Germany and worldwide. Although lots of research has been done on longtime (3 hrs – 27 days) stroke growth, not much is known about the acute stroke growth. In this paper a method for the image based analysis and visualization of short-time infarct growth in murine model based on time resolved T2* MR image sequences is presented. After manual definition of initial healthy and infarct volumes the corresponding histograms are extracted and used for classification of the stroke tissues for every T2* image sequence. After automatic classification computed thresholds can be used to 3D visualize stroke growth dynamically and analyze the infarct size over time. The method proposed was validated by medical experts in terms of visual comparison to histological images of the brains after stroke. The medical experts reported that the accuracy of the projected infarct size is sufficient for further analysis steps of infarct growth. In summary the method proposed can help to understand the evolution of strokes and may help to get new insights in this disease and improve the therapy for stroke patients in future.

Spinal cord lesions in patients with multiple sclerosis: comparison of MR pulse sequences.

PURPOSE To compare T2-weighted conventional spin-echo (CSE), fast spin-echo (FSE), shorttau inversion recovery (STIR) FSE, and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) FSE sequences in the assessment of cervical multiple sclerosis plaques. METHODS Twenty patients with clinically confirmed multiple sclerosis and signs of cervical cord involvement were examined on a 1.5-T MR system. Sagittal...

I-45: Advance MRI Sequences in Pelvic Endometriosis

Background: To assess MRI in diagnosing endometriotic lesions, emphasizing T2*weighted imaging efficacy. Materials and Methods: This prospective study of 48 females (22-38 years, average 29.6) clinically suspected of endometriosis from September 2009 to April 2012. MRI was performed with a 1.5 T imager (Siemens) with a body array coil. T1, T2 and T2* weighted (2D-FLASH) sequences were obtained ...

N-acetylaspartate distribution in proton spectroscopic images of ischemic stroke: relationship to infarct appearance on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE It is generally considered that tissue that appears abnormal on T2 MRI is already infarcted and that any penumbra lies outside the T2-visible lesion. We investigated the distribution of infarcted tissue using proton spectroscopic MRI. METHODS In patients with symptoms of acute hemispheric ischemic stroke, imaged within a maximum of 3 days of stroke, we explored the dist...

Optimal Pulse Sequence for Ferumoxides-Enhanced MR Imaging Used in the Detection of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Comparative Study Using Seven Pulse Sequences

OBJECTIVE To identify the optimal pulse sequence for ferumoxides-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in the detection of hepatocelluar carcinomas (HCCs). MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixteen patients with 25 HCCs underwent MR imaging following intravenous infusion of ferumoxides. All MR studies were performed on a 1.5-T MR system, using a phased-array coil. Ferumoxides (Feridex IV) at a dose of...

A comparison of MR sequences for lesions of the parotid gland.

PURPOSE To compare six MR sequences (plain and gadolinium-enhanced fat suppressed T1-weighted spin echo, T2-weighted standard spin echo, fat-suppressed and non-fat-suppressed T2-weighted fast spin echo, and inversion-recovery T2-weighted fast spin echo) in their ability to detect, delineate, and characterize lesions of the parotid gland. METHODS Fifty-eight parotid gland lesions imaged on 47 ...
